New shoes for children in need
“How cool” was all 2-year-old Pepe had to say as he waddled away in his brand new tennis shoes. For several months the U.S. Consulate and Peace Corps volunteers in Guadalajara have been conducting an outreach program at a local orphanage to try and better the lives of the little residents.
Led by the dedicated consulate community, a group of fifteen volunteers set out on a recent Thursday night to put the children in new shoes. The shoe donations were coordinated by Consulate families and their relatives in the U.S. Over two hours the group lined up, fitted and sent over 150 children on their way with shiny new shoes on their feet and smiles on their faces.
Consulate and Peace Corps volunteers make weekly visits to assist in the gargantuan task of feeding the children, changing diapers and just reading or talking with the children. The project is a fabulous way to dedicate time and resources to some of the most vulnerable little people in Mexico.
